Autumn Interiors: Richer colours, warmer spaces & simple seasonal changes

There’s something about autumn that makes us want to retreat indoors. The evenings get darker, the jumpers come back out and suddenly our homes become somewhere we want to feel that little bit warmer and cosier.

But bringing autumn into your home doesn’t mean covering every surface in pumpkins or completely redecorating.

Sometimes, it’s simply about taking inspiration from the colours outside and making a few small changes that make your home feel ready for the season.

Take your colour inspiration from nature

Autumn gives us some of the most beautiful colour combinations of the year.

This season, I’m particularly drawn to aubergine, burnt orange, deep teal, berry and turquoise. They’re richer than the lighter shades we tend to gravitate towards in spring and summer, but they still work beautifully together.

Aubergine and berry bring depth and warmth, while burnt orange adds that familiar earthy autumn tone. Deep teal feels calming and grounding, and a touch of turquoise stops the whole palette becoming too dark or heavy.

And you don’t need all five. Even introducing one or two alongside colours you already have can completely change the feel of a room.  So get outside and take a look.  This can be at any point in the day.  Mornings can bring that golden colour as the sun is peaking through trees shining on the leaves on the ground.  And Evenings can bring those deeper colours I've mentioned above.  What colour would you introduce?

Create layers for a richer, cosier home

One of the easiest ways to make a home feel cosier is through layers and texture.

Think cushions, throws, rugs and curtains. Mix softer fabrics with natural materials such as wood, woven baskets and ceramics.

Rather than changing your entire colour scheme, look at what you already have and add a couple of deeper tones. A burnt orange throw over your existing sofa or an aubergine cushion amongst neutral ones can be enough to give the room an autumn feel.

Lighting makes a difference too. As the evenings draw in, table lamps, floor lamps and warm pools of light can instantly make a room feel more inviting.

Small changes can make a big impact

This is probably my favourite part because it fits with how I believe our homes should work.

You don't always need a full redesign.

Changing artwork, adding a vase of seasonal foliage, swapping a few cushion covers or introducing candles and warmer accessories can give a room a completely different feel without spending a fortune.

You could even shop your own home first. Move accessories between rooms, bring out pieces you packed away for summer or simply rearrange what you already have.

Creating a home you love doesn't always mean buying more.  If you are looking for more of an impact without that full redesign, then how about up-cycling a piece a furniture?  A bookcase or coffee table could be that statement piece that really set the whole room off.

A season to slow down

Autumn naturally changes the way we use our homes. We spend a little more time indoors, the evenings become slower and our surroundings start to matter even more.

So rather than thinking about autumn decorating as following a trend, think about how you want your home to feel.

Warm. Comfortable. Calm. Welcoming.

Take inspiration from the changing colours outside, introduce the shades and textures that make you happy and create a home that feels good to come back to.

Because sometimes the smallest changes really do make the biggest difference.
